The outer edge of the dial consists of an angled chapter ring. This is a great way to give the watch dimensions. A lot of watches tend to look flat and two-dimensional, so it’s a smart choice to include an angular chapter ring instead. On this chapter ring, you can find the seconds markers. Date Window & Inscriptions The casing of the Citizen NY0040 has this brilliant rugged design which gives the watch this robust style and feeling. It has been used for all sorts of outdoor activities summer and winter for years. Dived with it in Tobago and the Grenadines plus NE. Compared it with the diving computer and the depth gauge was reliable down to 32 meters – i trusted it. Whether you are looking to dip your toe into the world of mechanical watches and are looking for a solid starting point, or you are in the market for a quality beater, the Citizen Promaster NY0040 definitely holds its own. Despite having flown under the radar for a long time, I think it’s a watch that deserves more recognition and consideration. With a retail price of around €190, it’s a true value proposition. With a military past for added credibility, these Citizens are a perfect care-free companion for any situation you might find yourself in.

My Fugu gets equal wrist time on a NATO strap and an aftermarket bracelet (I don’t particularly like rubber straps). The case shape and slightly smaller height of 12.5mm make this one of the best NATO-wearing watches I’ve owned. The Citizen Promaster NY0040 is often overshadowed when it comes to diving watches by the likes of the Seiko SKX007 or the Seiko SKX009 which there’s no denying, are impressive watches. I just think when it comes to ISO certified diving watches, the Promaster NY0040 deserves a little more credit.Strangely for me (who likes all things Panerai) the Tron takes it too far. I can just about cope with the lume on the case, but the strap? Come on. Regarding weaknesses of the SKX007, I dislike how the dial is a crisp white and the hands are off-white. To some, it may appear like patina, but I find it a little cheesy. Also, I see a small gap between the day and date wheel, which is not typical for Seiko. Aside from that, my only other general wish is for a hand-winding movement, but because this is Seiko, I can’t be too surprised that the watch is sold without one. I got a Casio Promaster 8203-824393 Y GN-4-S. As far as I know it’s called the “Japan” version. For me it is the “Yellow” version which means it has a yellow dial and a yellow rubber dive strap. The crown is no issue to me whatsoever because I wear it on the left wrist so it shouldn’t hit anything that easily.

At first, the idea was to select the best full lume dial watches from the past and the present. But during the research for this article, the scope kept getting wider as the magic of lume is not restricted to full lume dials. While there certainly is a list to be made with the best full lume dials, it would put some amazing watches that play brilliantly with the theme of light by using lume out of scope. So in that light (pun intended), let’s take a look at some of the best lume watches. Powering the NY0040 is a Citizen in house movement, the Miyota 8200. This is a 21 jewel movement with a 21,600 BPH which many find to be more accurate than the Seiko SKX007, although this can cause quite the debate.Personally, I’d have preferred a coin edged bezel design but that’s more down to my personal taste than anything else. That being said, a lot of other people obviously seem to like it.

Those Marathon SARs are brilliant. Plus, you have to give them props for offering such a great range of sizes. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying one, but I have a couple of saved searches set out just in case one day the right one comes around. The NY004’s unique crown position at 8:00 has been preserved in the Fugu, although the crown itself is now knurled rather than grooved- in my opinion a great upgrade, as knurling is low profile, has a tidy presentation and is unparalleled for good grip. The unusual location is kind of divisive among dive watch enthusiasts; for me, I love it! It prevents the crown from digging into the top of the wrist at all, and really sets this watch apart from any other diver. The crown is also signed with the Citizen Promaster logo. Finally, among the multiple watches produced under the Promaster collection, there’s one that has always ranked highly in the heart of enthusiasts, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m, also known as the NY0040. Launched in 1997, this watch (made of steel, in this instance) is one of the rare fully mechanical models of the collection and yet remains one of the most accessible, enduring, robust and, obviously cool-looking models. Consider this watch the SKX007 of Citizen, in terms of accessibility, attractiveness and robustness. And this NY0040 is the base for the watch we’ll be discovering today, the NY0100-50XE. Titanium and green dial for comfort/resistance and fun, but still the same old brilliant watch underneath. After looking into the watch design, quality, features, and pricing this watch received a 9/10 from us at The Watch Blog.

Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Green Dial NY0100 Review - Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Green Dial NY0100

To get things started we’re going to be taking a look at the general design of the dial. As is common practice for diving watches, the Citizen NY0040 has a high visibility design making it easy to read at a glance and in dim conditions. Right? I was completely blinded by the SKX euphoria of the watch community. I never even had the Promaster on my radar, but once it made its way there… there was no replacing it!Changes and upgrades from the NY004 include the shape of the lumed indices, now straight and sharp corned instead of round. The handset is changed as well, still massive and legible, but now more straight-sided, with a sort of straight cathedral-style hand for the hours, and bold, a red-trimmed arrow for the minutes. The arrow-tipped second hand is lumed, and trimmed in red also. The colored minute hand is a great feature for a working diver’s watch, as it draws the eye immediately to the most important hand on the face- and it looks very cool above water too. Another great thing about the watch is that you can always change the strap to any bracelet you prefer. If you don’t like the rubber strap or are looking forward to wearing the watch in a more casual or formal setting, this is what you do. The Citizen NY0040 looks good on any strap such as nylon and stainless steel. Price of the Citizen NY0040
